INTRODUCTION
TapeWinPro is a powerful database program which allows you to make a catalog
of all your backup tapes. This program can be especially useful for BBS
operators when they might need to find certain files their users are
requesting. There are many methods you can use to catalog a tape. But none of
these methods come close to the cataloging that TapeWinPro can provide.
Thank you for supporting this software, we hope it makes this cataloging
task easier for you.
The program has all the features of a disk cataloger. It will allow you to
have a catalog for ALL tapes, and in this database, it stores which tape and
volume number the file is in for easy retrievial. With the database you
create, you can store descriptions of each file - much like a diskette
cataloger. This is especially useful for archived data. TapeWinPro also
allows you to export your database to a compatible dBase file, so you can just
use TapeWinPro to catalog, and use your favorite database to view, or edit your
database to your liking! To make tape cataloging even easier, we have included
the ability to extract descriptions of a BBS file list and add them to your
catalog (if you have those files that match!).
TapeWinPro is an extremely easy to use program, after using the program
a few times, you will see how easy cataloging can be. These instructions are
provided, just as a general reference - much of what goes into manuals can be
very confusing these days, so we wanted to keep this short and to the point.
Enjoy Cataloging!

PROCEDURE BEFORE RUNNING TapeWinPro!
Installation and Configuration
------------------------------
You MUST store TapeWinPro in the same directory as your CMS software!
After installing TapeWinPro, run CONFIG.EXE (The configuration program that
comes with your backup software.), and turn off the use of EMS. This will
cause TapeWinPro to malfunction when cataloging as TapeWinPro is utilizing
this memory.
Run TCONFIG.EXE to configure for graphics modes and wallpaper background
wallpaper displaying. TapeWinPro comes configured for VGA display, so it
will be necessary to run the configuration utility if you are using the
software on anything less.
NOTE:
YOU MUST INSTALL TapeWinPro IN THE COLORADO BACKUP SOFTWARE DIRECTORY.
THE PROGRAM WILL NOT RUN PROPERLY IF THIS IS NOT DONE.
Getting Around
The interface in TapeWinPro is quite easy to use. Most everything you can do
by mouse. Just point at the button you wish to select, and press the left
mouse button. If you are using the keyboard, you can select the different
buttons by using the arrow keys, and press <ENTER> when the option you want
is highlighted. To get around even quicker, most options have 'hot-keys'.
In the menu listings the button name will have one of it's letters underlined.
To access that option with 'hot-keys', simply press the <alt> key, and press
the letter. This will save you time when you get more used to the interface.
To leave a menu, and go back to the previous menu, press the <esc> key.
Main Menu Commands
ADD TAPE TO DATABASE
This command allows you to catalog a tape. Most everything in the
cataloging process is done here. TapeWinPro will take care of reading
the tape and writing all the necessary information for the database.
TapeWinPro will allow you to catalog much above it's predecessor,
TapeWin. You can catalog more than triple the amount with the same
amount of memory.
After you select the ADD TAPE TO DATABASE, you will be prompted for the tape
name. It is important that you choose a name that will identify the tape for
later use. If you do not label your tapes, it is a good time to start. Give
TapeWinPro the name you put on the Tape's label or case - NOT the tape name
that is given before formatting a tape in the backup software.
After you have selected a unique tape name, and have inserted a tape
to be cataloged, select the OK button. As you will know, the tape drive
sits and thinks for a bit, and things start happening. TapeWinPro will
display a progress bar indicating how many volumes are on the tape and
how far it has gotten. This process takes awhile, since tape drives aren't
fast like hard drives, you might want to go and do something else while
TapeWinPro reads the tape. The amount of time it takes for each tape
varies as to how many volumes you have on the tape.
When the program has completed reading the information, it will them import
the data into your database.
DUPLICATE FILES WILL NOT BE WRITTEN:
If TapeWinPro finds a file to be the same name as one you already have
in your database, it will skip it - that record will not be put in your
database.
REMEMBER: Use a different tape name for each tape when you catalog!
BROWSE DATABASE
This menu has the necessary commands to list files to the screen, edit, search,
and restore files from the tape database you have created. After pressing the
'Browse Catalog' button, another menu will pop up asking by which field you
wish the database to be sorted. After selecting the sort method, the view
screen will come up with many options will come up. This listing shows all the
necessary descriptions, volumes, file sizes, etc.
You can get around the view screen easily with the following keys:
Key | What it Does
|---------------------|----------------------------------------------|
| Page UP | Move one screen up the list |
|---------------------|----------------------------------------------|
| Page DOWN | Move one screen down the list |
|---------------------|----------------------------------------------|
| UP Arrow | Move one record up the list |

|---------------------|----------------------------------------------|
| LEFT Arrow | Move data to the right in view screen |
|---------------------|----------------------------------------------|
| RIGHT Arrow | Move data to the left in view screen |

The buttons along the bottom of the screen are used to perform certain
actions. Here is a list of the buttons, and their action:

IMPORT BBS LIST
This command will allow you to Import file descriptions from a FILES.BBS
file format. The process searches your database against the FILES.BBS
list for a matching filename. If TapeWinPro finds a match, it will add
the description found in the FILES.BBS to your database. This command
can be a serious time saver for SysOps of BBS Services.
If you are in need of a special format, please call us! We can custom
write an importing option to better suit your needs!
PRINT DATABASE
There are times when you may want to list all of the database to a text
file or to the printer, this is what this option will do for you. The
file is just a plain dump of the database with the same type of list
format. When you press the 'Print Database' button, it will ask you by
which field you wish the listing to be sorted. After you select the sort
type, you will be prompted as to where you want the listing to go. If you
want to print the list, select the port to which your printer is attached.
If you want the list to go to a text file, select the 'File' button.
You will then be prompted for a filename for the dump, and it will be
placed in your current directory. If you elect to print this file, make
sure that your printer is on-line and ready to go. The list will look
similar to the List Files listing, all the descriptions, file sizes, and
volume names will be there! Remember, tapes can hold thousands of files!
TapeWinPro will first let you preview the output before you elect to start
printing if you choose to.
EXPORT DATABASE
Many people prefer using their own database program to view and edit their
data. TapeWinPro allows you to convert your database to a dBase IV format.
Please note that this command will not append to a current dBase IV file,
it will create a new file each time the command is executed.
The output filename is called 'TAPEWIN.DBF'
Q&A
Q: Some of the operations seem slow. Is there anyway to speed things up?
A: We strongly recommend that you have a disk cash enabled. This alone
should speed things up tremendously! Also, if you have a slower computer,
you may want to turn the GUI interface off. To do this, type TCONFIG and
select TEXT mode.
Q: I recently registered this, and like it a lot! Can I copy it and give it
to all my friends?
A: NO! But feel free to give them the evaluation version to try! Please
note that copying commercial software for other than backup purposes is
a federal offense. TapeWinPro contains an embedded serial number unique
for each copy of the program sold!
Q: The wallpaper is annoying. Can I take it out?
A: Yes! Run the program TCONFIG.EXE and choose not to display the wallpaper.
This will also speed up the main menu display and first time program
execution.
Q: I get an error: 'Too Many Files Open'
A: The FILES variable in your CONFIG.SYS is too small. Setting this to
FILES=50 should remedy this problem.
Q: TapeWinPro doesn't catalog my tape? The drive doesn't move?
A: Did you correctly install the cataloger? TapeWinPro needs to be installed
in the SAME directory as for CMS (DOS only) software resides. If this isn't
the case, correct the situation and try again. If you still cannot catalog the
tape, contact technical support for further assistance.
Q: TapeWinPro starts to catalog, then exits to the DOS prompt?
A: Run the CONFIG.EXE program that comes with the Tape Backup software,
where it asks to use EMS if available, make sure it is not checked.
